Case Study and Material Selection Recommendations for Electrowinning Aisles and Stairs

The handrails are made of FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) material.

We are currently on-site at a hydrometallurgical copper project in Africa, where the copper electrowinning plant was designed and equipment supplied by PRS. The following images showcase the copper electrowinning plant, where we have utilized FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) Capping Boards for the platforms and aisles.

Cutting and Installing Aisles

The aisle boards are cut to match the positioning of the cross beams underneath. These boards are then assembled and secured using fastening components to ensure stability and alignment.

Materials for Support Columns and Their Connectors to Cross Beams

The cross beams beneath the FRP platform and aisles are made of FRP material with vinyl ester resin for enhanced corrosion resistance. The support columns are constructed from stainless steel, and the connection between the beams and columns is reinforced using angle iron bolts.

Staircase Materials

The staircase frame is primarily constructed from stainless steel, while the stair treads are made of FRP Capping Boards to ensure durability and slip resistance.

For cost-effective solutions, copper electrowinning plants can opt for a fully FRP-based staircase pillar. In this case, we recommend using pultruded vinyl ester resin FRP, as it provides superior strength and longevity.

The overall framework of the staircase is made of steel.
Handrail Specifications

Handrails for aisles, platforms, and staircases are made of FRP. To ensure safety compliance, if the height difference between the platform/aisles and the ground is ≥2000mm, the handrail height should be ≥1500mm.

Procurement Checklist for Accurate Installation

To avoid errors or omissions and ensure 100% compatibility with the design drawings during on-site installation, the design team must provide a comprehensive procurement list. This list should include:

  • Component names

  • Dimensions

  • Specifications

  • Materials

  • Quantities

Why Choose FRP for Electrowinning Facilities?

FRP is widely used in copper electrowinning plant due to its corrosion resistance, lightweight properties, and ease of installation. However, to ensure sufficient support strength, it is recommended that support columns remain made of stainless steel. By selecting high-quality FRP materials for the platforms and aisles, and combining them with robust stainless steel support columns and precise installation, mining operations can enhance the longevity and safety of their electrowinning infrastructure.
