The selection of copper ore beneficiation methods depends primarily on the ore type (sulfide, oxide, or mixed) and associated valuable elements.
1. Sulfide Copper Ore Beneficiation
Sulfide copper ores (such as chalcopyrite and chalcocite) are the main source of refined copper. The primary method is froth flotation.
- Process: Crushing & grinding → Conditioning → Addition of collectors (xanthates, dithiophosphates) and frothers → Rougher, scavenger, and cleaner flotation.
- Common modifiers: Lime is used to depress pyrite and control pH.
- Special flowsheets: Preferential flotation or bulk flotation depending on mineral associations.
2. Oxide Copper Ore Beneficiation
Oxide copper minerals (malachite, chrysocolla, etc.) are hydrophilic and more difficult to float. Common methods include:
- Sulfidization Flotation: Sodium sulfide is added to form a sulfide layer on the mineral surface, followed by xanthate flotation.
- Fatty Acid Flotation: Direct flotation using fatty acids (lower selectivity).
- Leach-Precipitation-Flotation (LPF): Acid leaching followed by iron cementation and flotation of sponge copper.
- Segregation-Flotation: High-temperature roasting with salt and coal to produce metallic copper, then flotation (energy-intensive).
3. Mixed Copper Ore Beneficiation
- Sulfidization flotation of the oxide portion, followed by unified flotation.
- Combined process: Flotation first recovers sulfide copper, then the oxide tailings are treated by leaching.
4. Special Combined Processes
- Leach-SX-EW: Ideal for low-grade ores and tailings.
- Gravity and Magnetic Separation: Used for coarse copper particles or associated heavy minerals (gold) and iron removal.
5. Recovery of Associated Elements
- Copper-molybdenum separation
- Copper-sulfur separation
- Gold recovery from copper-gold ores using gravity + flotation
The optimal beneficiation process must be determined through detailed process mineralogy studies (mineral types, liberation size, gangue composition, and valuable byproducts).
