Corundum Slurry Pump

Corundum Slurry Pump

Introduction

The corundum slurry pump was developed to address the challenges of harsh working conditions in hydrometallurgical ore processing, where conventional metal pumps made from high-chromium cast iron or duplex stainless steel suffer from poor corrosion and wear resistance. These pumps face rapid impeller wear, reduced efficiency, and short lifespans when conveying corrosive media with solid particles. In response, we designed a highly efficient, energy-saving, and wear-resistant diamond-lined corundum slurry pump. This innovative product is widely used in industries such as metallurgy, mining, electric power, and chemicals, delivering excellent cost-effectiveness and strong market performance.

Corundum

corundum

Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) and one of the hardest natural minerals, second only to diamond. It occurs naturally as precious gemstones such as ruby and sapphire, but in industrial applications, it is synthetically produced for its remarkable hardness, durability, and chemical resistance.

  • Extreme Hardness: With a Mohs hardness of 9 (just below diamond, which is 10), corundum is highly resistant to wear and abrasion.
  • High Melting Point: Corundum has a very high melting point of about 2,050°C, making it ideal for use in high-temperature environments.
  • Chemical Stability: It is chemically inert, meaning it resists corrosion from most acids, alkalis, and other corrosive substances.
  • Low Thermal Expansion: Corundum has excellent thermal stability, with minimal expansion when exposed to heat, contributing to its use in various high-temperature industrial processes.

Technical Background

The newly developed wear-resistant corundum-lined slurry pump uses AL2O3 as the main material and is baked at 1,700°C, giving it HRA80-90 hardness, second only to diamond. It surpasses high-chromium cast iron in wear resistance and stainless steel in acid resistance. The pump’s body is ceramic-lined with a stainless steel exterior, making it durable, safe, and easy to maintain.

Its wear resistance is 266 times better than manganese steel and 171.5 times higher than high-chromium cast iron, extending its service life by at least five times. This results in lower material consumption, reduced maintenance costs, and increased productivity with significant economic benefits.

The corundum-lined slurry pump offers several advantages:

  • Higher efficiency: The precise manufacturing process reduces hydraulic losses, and the smoother ceramic surface improves efficiency by 3%.
  • Smoother operation: Corundum’s lighter weight (1/3 of metal) results in a more stable pump operation with less shaft disturbance.
  • Advanced structure: The corundum lining prevents direct contact between metal and media, enhancing both wear resistance and the overall strength and stability of the pump.

Wear Resistance and Corrosion Resistance

In the field of domestic special industrial pump applications, the working conditions are mostly dominated by highly corrosive and highly abrasive media, and the use environment is harsh. This requires the pump material to have good corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance, and corundum material will be a good choice. an excellent choice.

Corundum also has good chemical stability. It can resist corrosion from almost all inorganic acids, organic acids, and alkalis, and has excellent oxidation resistance.
