Center Driven Thickener

A Center Driven Thickener uses a central drive and shaft to move the rake assembly and collect settled solids toward the underflow discharge area. It is a practical configuration for continuous thickening where stable operation, manageable maintenance and reliable mechanical performance are important.

PRS designs center-driven thickeners around the actual slurry conditions rather than using a single standard configuration. Feed characteristics, solids concentration, required underflow density and site conditions are considered before the equipment is sized and configured.

  • Lower Water Consumption and Better Resource Recovery

Efficient thickening allows more water to be recovered from the settled slurry before it moves to the next stage.

Depending on the material and process conditions, PRS thickening systems can achieve high material recovery while returning a significant portion of clarified water to the process. This is particularly useful for plants where freshwater consumption, water balance or tailings management is an important operating consideration.

Flocculant cost can have a direct impact on the operating cost of a thickener.

PRS optimizes the feed and mixing arrangement according to the characteristics of the slurry to create suitable conditions for flocculation and settling. A reference consumption of around 100 g/t of dry solids can be achieved under suitable process conditions, but actual dosage should be established through material testing rather than treated as a fixed value.

Local sourcing of compatible flocculants can also help reduce logistics costs.

  • Hydraulic Center Drive for Continuous Operation

The center drive provides the torque required to operate the rake mechanism under changing solids loading.

For large-capacity and high-solids applications, the hydraulic system can provide high starting torque and controlled operation. Torque monitoring and rake-lifting protection help reduce the risk of rake bogging when excessive solids load develops at the tank bottom.

This gives operators an additional layer of protection during abnormal operating conditions.

  • Flexible Tank Structure

For large-diameter thickeners, PRS can use a flexible steel tank structure with radial supporting beams.

Compared with conventional heavy rigid tank structures, the modular design can reduce the amount of work required at the installation site. Components can be fabricated and trial-assembled before shipment, helping reduce field adjustment and installation risk.

Steel plate selection, structural arrangement and foundation connection are determined according to equipment size and site conditions.

Process-Based Design Before Equipment Fabrication

A thickener cannot be properly sized from flow rate alone.

Before finalizing the equipment, PRS can evaluate the material characteristics through laboratory testing and process analysis, including:

  • Feed flow rate
  • Feed solids concentration
  • Settling characteristics
  • Flocculation behavior
  • Target underflow concentration
  • Solid flux
  • Underflow rheology / yield stress

The resulting data is used to determine the appropriate thickener diameter, feed arrangement, rake system and operating conditions.

This approach is particularly important when treating fine or difficult-to-settle materials.

Mining and mineral processing plants do not always operate under ideal conditions. Equipment may need to accommodate high slurry loads, variable feed conditions, wind loads or seismic requirements.

PRS can carry out structural calculations based on project-specific loading conditions, including:

For projects in high-seismic regions, the tank and supporting structure can be designed according to the applicable local engineering requirements.

A previous PRS installation in Peru has operated continuously following seismic events; however, project-specific seismic performance should always be evaluated according to the actual site conditions and applicable design code.

PRS combines process testing, mechanical design, structural calculation, fabrication and site installation to develop the equipment around the customer’s actual operating conditions.

For a new plant, we can work from process data and plant layout.

For an existing plant, the design can be based on existing tank dimensions, foundation conditions and equipment arrangement where replacement or expansion is required.
